GHOSTS & HOBOS

I painted this lovely hobo couple on the bathroom doors at Armada HQ in Costa Mesa yesterday.  We have an affinity for hobos around here since they seem to be omnipresent and completely unavoidable.  Sometimes they do funny things like bring bags of their feces into our office.  Oh hobos...

Also, someone had a heart attack in the men's room a long time ago and now he haunts the bathroom and surrounding area.  He's a pretty lame ghost, and only seems to be able to turn the lights on and off and close the door on dogs that wander inside.  Come on ghost, step your haunting game up.

CRAZY 4 CULT

CRAZY 4 CULT opens tomorrow night!  Very proud to be a part of this awesome show.  In keeping with their plan of global art domination, this year Gallery 1988 has moved one of their biggest annual exhibitions to NYC.  The gallery space is an impressive two floors and the show boasts some of the best work from over 200 artists.  

Previews of people's work have been popping up all over the place and everything looks incredible so far.  **Check out a sweet write up on the show and some images from Thrillist, including a sneaky appearance from my Eraserhead piece (image #10).

My painting for the show is admittedly weird, but perhaps not even quite as strange as the movie that inspired it.  After watching David Lynch's 'Eraserhead', I was disturbed and intrigued and knew I wanted to create a piece around it.  The movie has a lot of spermatozoa floating around in it, so I focused on the sperm image as a symbol for life and death and got real weird with it.  Hope you like the painting!

AMERICAN HERO

"The American Hero" is a group show that opens next Saturday, July 7th at Gallery 27 in Chicago.  The show pays tribute to Americana in film and pop culture.  Artist Adam Devarney tipped me off about this new gallery, having recently moved to Chicago.  I believe this is only the second show they've done, (The first was a Wes Anderson tribute show) but I saw the title and was really inspired to do something for it.  If you are a Chicago friend or happen to be in the windy city next weekend, definitely go check this show out, it looks like its going to be really awesome.  Adam will be in it, and a bunch of other cool people too. Check out the show flyer for Gallery 27's address.

This piece took me a little over a full day to paint in total, but the fact that I left it alone after that is somewhat of a personal accomplishment as I have a tendency to want to overwork everything.  I didn't focus on a specific movie or piece of pop culture for this one either, which was nice.  Instead I thought on the much broader theme of violence, and came up with something I think is pretty cool.  Hope you like it.

Portraits

I did a couple portraits of celebs recently that I'd like to share with you, internet.  The first one was for my two friends, who for some reason are both obsessed with Drake.  They are girls, so... whatever.

I also really wanted to do a painting of this screenshot I took from Breaking Bad (one of the best shows ever) where Walter looks particularly insane, so here's that, too.

"Offering" (For Larry David)/IS THIS THING ON? 2

I'm really excited about the upcoming show at Gallery 1988 Melrose; firstly, because I got to pay tribute to a brilliant comedian whose work I am very fond of, and secondly, because the opening reception is going to be hosted by one of my childhood idols, Weird Al Yankovich!  The show is called "Is This Thing On" 2: The Weird Year, and it opens Friday, March 9th at 7 PM.  As always, it's got lots of great artists in it and you should definitely go check it out if you can.  You can read more about the show HERE.

I received a long list of great comedians to choose to depict for this show, and I quickly singled out Larry David, as 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' is one of my absolute favorite shows.  If you are a die-hard fan of the show like I am, you should be able to identify quite a fair amount of jokes from the show in there.  Everyone else,  I really have no idea what you'll make of this...
